Registration tax
How the registration tax is calculated, deductions, leasing tax and export refund — in short.
How it's calculated
Danish registration tax for passenger cars is based on the taxable value (market price incl. VAT) in a tiered system and is adjusted by CO₂ emissions and applicable deductions. Rates change regularly — current rates are shown in DMR / the Motor Register.
When does it apply?
- On first registration in Denmark — e.g. when importing.
- On conversion that changes the tax base.
- On recalculation after leasing.
Export refund
When a registered vehicle is exported out of Denmark, the owner can apply for a refund of the remaining tax with the Danish Motor Agency. The car must be under 10 years old, inspected and deregistered in DMR.
